Chair – Micah Chappell, MBA, CBO – City of Seattle, DCI

MISSION

To promote appropriate regulations for building and construction design practices, methodologies, and standards.

VISION

To consider an acceptable balance between human safety, functionality and economy. TCD strives to improve construction laws and the built environment by working in collaboration with industry professionals, design professionals, jurisdictional representatives, the general public, and codes and standards development organizations in an open and consensus-based manner. TCD decisions are informed by using the most current substantive information available to propose new and innovative concepts, correct errors in the technical codes, and recommended deletion or changing provisions that have been found to be ineffective. We do this to sustain the functional and efficient use of the built environment for the benefit of building occupants and consumers.

WORK PLAN

  • Develop and submit code change proposals and public comments to the ICC and SBCC code development processes
  • Attend ICC and SBCC code development hearings, monitor WABO TCD and other code change proposals
  • Prepare recommended positions on code change proposals for the ICC Online Governmental Consensus Vote
  • Review and prepare recommended positions on ICC or SBCC code development process-related matters for the executive board and WABO membership
  • Serve as technical resource for the executive board and WABO representative(s) assigned roles in the ICC or SBCC code development processes (e.g. ICC Code Development Committee members; building official representative on the SBCC; SBCC Technical Advisory Group members; other official WABO representatives; etc)
  • Serve as technical resource to the executive board and WABO Lobbyist on code-related legislation
  • Prepare in other related standards development processes, as assigned by the Chair.

WHY YOU SHOULD VOLUNTEER WITH THIS COMMITTEE

The WABO Technical Code Development (TCD) Committee was formed to give WABO members and associate members an opportunity to contribute their knowledge and experience in the construction industry with the goal of improving technical codes on the State and National levels. WABO members who participate in this process are rewarded with a better understanding of how our codes are created and the intent behind the code requirements. “There is satisfaction in taking your ideas to improve the code from concept to print” states TCD Chairman Lee Kranz. TCD members also gain knowledge & perspective through collaboration with representatives from a broad spectrum of the construction profession. These include building and fire code officials, industry representatives, technical experts, legal counsel, architects, engineers, and code educators who participate in the code development process. Scholarship funds are also available for TCD members to cover most, if not all, of the cost to attend the ICC Hearings.
